a116 Restore Wiring Help!

Post by kolakidd »

Hi All,

This is my first post on this amazing resource. Any help on this would be immensely appreciated!

I am currently restoring a set of oa116, the cabinets are in very bad condition, but the crossovers and speaker arrays are all 100%.

My only issue is that the units were sold in pieces and wiring between the mid's, tweeters, and main crossover were all disconnected. I would really appreciate any indication on what the wiring configuration is for these crossovers.

I know the following
Blue/Grey > Tweeter Crossover
Brown/Orange > Midrange
Yello/Black > Bass
Red/Black > Input

I just need help identifying where I connect them to the main crossover
BAS > BASS POS
UNLABELED > INDUCTOR
UNLABELED > INPUT POS
DISK > INDUCTOR
+ > ?
MR - > ?
- > INPUT NEG
BAS > BASS NEG
DISK > ?
MR + > ?

Hi
I don't fully understand your "description". But perhaps this picture gives you the answer. Good luck.

From left to right as in STDI:s excellent picture:

1. Bass +
2. To the yellow coil below the crossover
3. Input +
4. To the yellow coil below the crossover
5. Tweeter crossover + (blue)
6. Midrange - (brown)
7. Input -
8. Bass -
9. Tweeter crossover - (grey)
10. Midrange + (orange)

The colors on the cables will guide you to the sound - I hope :)

Thank you so much, you've saved me a ton of time.

I took the picture with my iPhone, it was a lucky shot. I wanted to make sure that others could use it as a reference if they were in the same situation as me.

Thanks again guys, the wiring worked out perfectly, I'm getting a bit of distortion on the midrange, but everything else is working. Astounding bass from this speaker.

I need to figure out what the distortion issue on the midrange is, both mid ranges were professionally restored. The bass is not original, I believe they may be Vifa, but branded Mission.

I had a bit of crackle on one of the tweeters, but it turned out to be corroded wiring, I resoldered the entire tweeter crossover and that fixed it up. I would love to know if there is a cheaper replacement for the tweeters.

This driver is ok for the bass and no need for a new crossover.

Plug and play!

The original bassdriver is hard to find.

Some say this driver doesn´t fit well in the OA 116. Supposedly made for small enclosures. It produces bass though.

Hi,
Thanks for the recommendations and feedback.

I have identified the woofer as this:
http://www.hifitalo.fi/uploads/files/pr ... -20-08.pdf

The base of the enclosure has been modified to fit it. The thing is that the woofer is 8 ohm and nothing has been modified on the crossover. I want to test the woofer, but I'm worried about the ohm rating. I could run 16 ohms in parallel with the woofer to have it present as a 5,3 ohm. I really don't want to mess with the inductor. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I created a new base board to test the woofer. I'm having another issue though and I don't know if anyone can help?

I am getting distortion and scratchiness on the tweeters when listening to piano. It is the original tweeter set, I have tested them all and they all measure perfectly from an ohm point of view, and a sweep from 0-20,000hz does not reveal any distortion or scratchiness. I have tested this on two amps with the same results. I have treated the outside edge of one set of the tweeters, but this made no difference.

The speaker crossover follows the original schematic:

The only difference is the fact that I have added the 8 ohm Vifa Woofer listed above http://www.hifitalo.fi/uploads/files/pr ... -20-08.pdf. I need to do some work on this woofer in order to match it to the existing crossover points, and frankly I am tempted to go with the Silver Flute, but I want to sort out the tweeter issue before I do any further purchasing.

Change the bassdriver without changing the coil is not recommended.

An issue discussed here(in swedish) in an another fora.(faktiskt.se):

Have you examined the speaker terminals and cleaned them ?
