Rubber surrounds and other questions for OA-14 , OA-2212

Hello everyone,

I'm restoring a pair of OA-14s, with, I think, Mark 1 woofers, and OA-2212s, with what I believe are Mark 4s. Would anyone recommend using rubber surrounds? I would hate to go through all this work twice or three times. What do you think?

I'm also looking for schematics and the list of recommended upgrades for the OA-2212, if anyone has them available.

I'm also looking for a few the brackets that fasten the lip of the speakers to the cabinet. If these aren't available, I may have some fabricated. Would anyone be interested in some?

With highest regards, Pete

Hi, Pete.
Great effort to restore these lovely old speakers.
You could, if not wanting to restore the mid/woofers youself, by restored ones from one of the admins here at forum.
I think that possibility is mentioned on the resauration pages on this site.
Regarding your question, i dont think its good too any other type of surround, then the original. You may alter the way the speaker works, and measures.

Best regards: Fredrik.

Hi !

Using rubber surrounds is possible but not recommendable if you ask me.

They are, or at least were when i checked, slightly heavier (and possibly somewhat stiffer) compared to original surrounds.

This would impact the performance to some degree.
Perhaps not to a disaster but it would be noticable.

The way I see it is better to use foam surrounds if you can find them but rubber surrounds are better than replacing the units with other types of woofers.

So good luck whatever your decision is.

Best regards

Martin

Peter,

You might find this whole discussion at the attached thread helpful. I did my second pair by the "battery Terminal" method and it works very well:

Good luck with your project. my pair (the "battery terminal" ones) have just been playing downstairs and I enjoy them anew every time.

Thank you ColesKing. I studied that with interest and am ready to go. I've used the battery method before, but can't say I have perfected it. I'll post how it went. This may take a while - I have a newborn boy. Cheers.
