Sonab OD-11, needing tweeters and suspensions

Post by Sylvainqc »

Hello friends,

I live near Quebec city in Canada. I have bought a few, used Sonab OD-11 and all of them have blown tweeeters, and rotten foam suspensions. Anybody can indicate me where I can find replacement parts? these Peerless tweeters do not seem to be in production or available anymore.

As well, how can one "open" these boxes? I would like to install new "post" connectors. I have removed the screws, but the fascia seem to be "glued" in place. Is it so?

Thanks in advance.

You can email me directly as well at "[email protected]".

Need your help!

Sylvain,
foams you can buy here http://www.wooferrepair.com/6kit.html and it's the second kit from the top that has the best fit.
If the tweeters are completely blown you have a problem as the replacement drivers are not available yet and will not be available until summer.
In the mean time check out your fellow countryman's ad here on the CarlssonPlanet http://www.carlssonplanet.com/forum/vie ... =22&t=3991 where he sell what seems to be a reasonable replacement at a decent price and would at least give your OD11 a temporary solution.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

Hello Staffan,

First, thanks for your answer and info. About the tweeters, you seem to mention that they will be available this summer. Can you tell me more? will these be original ones? improved ones, copies.. etc.. Then, may be I should wait.

Since "none" of the tweeters have survived.. (these were in a bar) then, I have no way about "how to choose" a decent replacement tweeter since I have nothing to compare with. I would like my OD 11 to sound as good as the originals. By the way, are the OD-11 interesting, compared to other Sonab models?

Keep me informed about the new tweeters, please.

And thanks again for answering me.

Hi

The tweeters used in OD-11 is the Peerless MT20HFC cone tweeter.

It is sold for many years in huge quantities all over the world.
One source for these tweeters can be garage-sales, for instance.

Look for old speakers that have these installed.

Also, one possibility is to buy second hand, perhaps someone here is interested in offering you a pair?

Woofers in their latest form can be found at http://www.hifikit.se, search for "Sonab" or "B65oa-II"

Best regards

Best regards

Martin

Hello Martin,

Thanks for your suggestions. For the tweeters, I'll try to find some of them used.. or wait until the Sonab board here launches its own replacement. A guy here (Array) sells "equivalents" made by Matsushita. I wonder if they sound as good or ..

As for the woofers, the cones and voice coils are ok, I need only to replace the foam suspensions. These drivers seem to be of good quality, with huge Alnico magnets. By the way.. I have 12 of these OD-11. Bought them in a flea market. Clean cabinets, but all blown tweeters, and foam rot.. I can't wait to put them back in shape.

Thanks again for your collaboration

Sylvain
