Nya basen Carlsson B65-oa IV
Nu har ersättningsbasen till Sonabs samtliga 70-talshögtalare kommit i en ny, fjärde och ytterligare förbättrad version. Den heter Carlsson B65-oa IV och är som tidigare framtagen inom Stiftelsen Stig Carlsson, SSC som förvaltar minnet efter högtalargeniet Stig Carlsson. Den nya versionen finns dessutom i 5,3 ohmsversion anpassad för basmontering i OA-116 och OA2212.
Stig Carlsson konstruerade själv den fantastiska, klassiska 6,5-tumsbasen SC165 som användes i hela Sonabs 70-talsserie OD-11, OA-12, OA-14, OA-116 & OA-2212 samt i 80- och 90-talets Carlssonmodeller OA-50 och OA-50.2. Totalt hanndet bli 4 versioner av elementet under Stigs livstid. Efter hans bortgång tog istället SSC på sig uppgiften att fortsätta tillverkningen och ytterligare utveckla och förbättra elementet som i SSC:s nu fyra olika varianter alltid hetat Carlsson B65. I sin nyaste version finns B65oa-IV i både 8 ohm och 5.3 ohm och fungerar därmed som ersättningselement även som basar i OA116 och OA-2212. Huvudkonstruktör för elementet är ingenjör Ingvar Öhman. I own 2 pairs of Sonab OA14 Loudspeakers. One pair I refurbished with all new components from HiFi Kit, including the new crossover. I have constantly been intrigued by the difference in sound quality from the loudspeaker since the upgrade. To be honest I am disappointed with the sound quality. The T22 tweeters are TOO bright and whole loudspeaker sound is not as accurate as I would have hoped. To give you an example there are passages of music that I know well, such as Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon. There should be the sound of a drum cymbal coming from the R loudspeaker, being tapped lightly enough to be heard. It is not there on the new upgrade!
How do I know? The second pair of OA14’s are an original pair in excellent condition and the cymbal sound is audible on track 4 about 3:30 minutes into the track. The sound of the originals is flatter and more musical and has the characteristics of accuracy, clarity and timing that should be enjoyed. So, either the design of the crossover or the new T22 tweeters don’t appear to match each other or the more powerful drivers is not necessarily the answer here. I don’t think that changing the array of tweeters to a Y shape will change the situation and why should it.
Well, if anyone can offer a suggestion or a better tweeter to use then I would be very keen to hear what is out there. I still think that the new drivers are too powerful for the OA14 cabinet.
